Winter Sports are starting up again at De Soto High School for the 2018-19 school year. There are many winter sports, but two specific ones are bowling and girls’ basketball.

Sophomore Maddy Calvello plays on the varsity bowling team. Calvello is very dedicated to bowling and has been involved in the sport since she was younger. She still bowls as much as she can, even during the offseason.

“I go every Sunday to Park Lanes for a few hours to practice,” Calvello said.

Calvello thinks the new Regional assignments in Class 5A will be good for both the girls’ and boys’ bowling teams because they won’t be competing against dominant teams that consist of multiple experienced bowlers

“We won’t be bowling teams in Topeka for Regionals. They were all very good bowlers, and I think I will do much better [not playing them],” Calvello said.

Calvello is excited to be competing in the new conference and being on the bowling team.

“I’m excited for the new opportunities and different Regionals,” Calvello said.

Ryan Robie, head girls basketball coach and social studies teacher at DHS is also excited for the girls upcoming basketball season.

“I’m excited about it [the season], we have a lot of girls coming back that played a big role for our successes last year and so far I’ve seen a shift in how we go about practice and how we attack each moment,” Robie said.

Robie feels that the girls on the basketball team work very well together and that their chemistry is great.

“My perception is that things are really good so far. I feel like it’s never going to be perfect, but I think this group all has a common mindset of what they want out of the season and what its going to take to get that,” Robie said,“We talked a lot about having to surrender the me for the we and being focused on a common goal.”
