De Soto High School Student Council members traveled to Louisburg High School for a yearly event called StuCo League on April 10.

“Everyone in our league all meet together at a school, and it switches every year who hosts it. We hosted it last year and Louisburg did it this year, and it’s just a way for StuCo kids to all meet together and swap ideas,” said StuCo sponsor and math teacher Katie Meserko.

At StuCo league, students and sponsors were able to discuss what was being done within each different school’s student council organization.

“We discussed what works for their school, what doesn’t, what’s a big fundraiser and what are good spirit weeks that they find a lot of the students participating in. It’s just a way to really steal and tweak ideas from each other to make our school’s pep rise,” Meserko said.

Guest speakers and small groups were also on the agenda for the event.

“We listened to three guest speakers about how to be good leaders and leave positive impacts in our schools. We also broke off into groups with people from other schools and talked about everything we do as a student council,” said sophomore StuCo representative Corinne Dais. “We talked about dances, spirit days, fundraising, charities and different policies we have at our schools. It was really interesting to hear all of the fun things that other schools do, and it gave us ideas on what we can do here at DHS.”

According to Meserko, it was brought a lot of new quality ideas and ways to improve current events to the table.

“Sometimes we [StuCo] miss out on things, like a certain idea that would be so easy to do and that we haven’t even thought about. Other times we find that we made something way more complicated than it needed to be, and someone else had a great idea about how to make it more efficient,” Meserko said. “It’s really just about tweaking and fine tuning what we do to make everything during the school year run smoothly.”

The StuCo league event wasn’t the only thing that StuCo members got to enjoy that day.

“After we left we all got lunch at either Panera or Chipotle, and then most of us went to Freezing Moo after that,” Daise said. “It was a good bonding experience for us, and we had a lot of fun on the bus ride home. It was also super fun to meet new people from our league.”

According to sophomore StuCo member Colton Jones, the experience was an overall success.

“The best parts were probably getting to hear all the things that are happening in everyone’s school and getting to see people from the other schools that I’ve played basketball against, or the bus ride home,” Jones said. “StuCo is like a big family and everyone gets along, and we got to make a lot of memories. Overall, the trip was a lot of fun.”

As for the future of StuCo League, DHS will be hosting it again next year in honor of moving into the new United Kansas Conference.
