As we get further into the school year, more and more seniors are taking college visits to decide where they will be attending next fall. On Oct. 19, family and consumer science teacher Caroline Friday took seven students to visit Pittsburg State University on their Family and Consumer Science Career Day.

Students were able to learn about “all the career opportunities in the Family and Consumer Science program there,” according to Friday.

Not all the students who went on the visit were decided on teaching FACS.

“I mostly took kids who were interested in teaching or a FACS degree, but they didn’t necessarily have to want to teach. I also took kids who were interested in working with kids or fashion,” Friday said.

The students also learned about opportunities in the FACS department that they didn’t even know existed.

“One option was being a nanny basically for wealthy families that want someone who not only is good with kids, but has an education in child development,” Friday said. “Another one I thought was really interesting that we didn’t know about was working for a resort or on a cruise as the children’s activity coordinator.”

Friday and the students also took the opportunity to tour other parts of PSU after the FACS Career Day had ended.

“We did more than just the FACS day while we were there,” Friday said. “I arranged a visit with the nursing department as well as the education department too, so they learned about other opportunities at Pitt State as well.”

For some students, these extra opportunities proved to be very useful.

“I was interested in teaching FACS, but I changed my mind to nursing after touring the nursing school,” senior Holly Capling said. “I just got that gut feeling.”

Other students learned what they want out of their future university after touring the campus.

“I think some of the kids were having trouble deciding where to go to school, and the trip helped them give them a better idea of what they’re looking for in a campus and stuff like that,” Friday said.

The students weren’t the only ones who enjoyed themselves.

“I always enjoy going back to Pittsburg. I was able to meet with several of my old professors and got to hear them speak, so that was really nice,” Friday said. “I am excited for next year’s visit.”
