Cross country competes at Regionals

The De Soto High School varsity cross country team went to Regionals at Johnson County Community College on Oct. 22.

Neither of the teams qualified for State, but DHS had two individual runners qualify, junior Gabby Collins and sophomore Sam Hubert.

“It was really exciting, we did not know until it was announced and so everyone was holding on, barely able to breathe and once we heard their name called, everybody just started screaming,” head coach Katie Wilber said.

Hubert placed 20th out of 51 runners with a time of 17:12.60.

“I knew there were a certain number of guys I needed to beat and I got the feeling when I finished that I was ahead of them, so when they called me up there, I was really excited,” Hubert said.

Collins placed 19th out of 46 runners with a time of 20:34.22.

“I was really excited. Sam [Hubert]

texted me and told me and I freaked out and started jumping around because I did not think I made it,” Collins said.

Collins and Hubert will run at State at Rim Rock Farm outside of Lawrence on Saturday Oct. 29.
