Seniors Joey Hundley and Braxton Henry tackle a Paola player on Sept. 11. This week, DHS is being featured on KMBC 9.

De Soto High School’s football team has been voted by the Kansas City metro area to be covered by KMBC 9 this Friday night on Oct. 2. Called Hyvee Game of the Week, the DHS vs. Spring Hill High School football game will be featured on KMBC 9’s news broadcast.

For the past week, people living in the in the Kansas City area could go online and vote for which team they wanted to see covered.

As of noon on Thursday, official voting closed with a 53 percentage majority favoring the DHS vs. SHHS game.

According to head football coach Brian King, the Hyvee game of the week is a great way to bring more attention to his players.

“A lot of times they stream those games online and they have photographers there, and they give the team more exposure than they normally get,” King said.

Contrary to popular belief, the game will not be televised on any official news channel. Instead, the DHS v. SHHS game will be featured on a small segment of the KMBC 9 newscast that Friday night. In addition to being featured, both teams voted as the game of the week receive $500 from Hyvee.

Despite the losing 1-3 record of SHHS, the wildcats don’t expect an easy game.

“I think there’s a lot of areas where we can take advantage of against Spring Hill, and they’re a good team, so it’s going to be tough, but I think we can get it down, I believe in our team,” said starting varsity quarterback Nate Thompson.

The theme for the student body on Friday night is “USA” themed. Students are encouraged to dress up in american colors to support the football team.

By being featured as the Hyvee game of the week, the DHS football team will benefit from larger exposure around the KC metro area, and also from a monetary bonus.
