Cross Country teams finish the regular season strong

The De Soto High School cross country teams have consistently been getting good times at meets throughout the season. They hope to continue their success at Regionals and State.

The boys team got first place at League on Thursday, and the girls team received second place.

The boys team is currently ranked second in the state 4A division by the Kansas Coaches Association, and head coach Chris McAfee believes they can finish the year one spot higher, holding the 4A State Championship trophy.

“The guys have a good shot at it. Winning a state title takes a lot with everyone being healthy and feeling good, but I think we’ll probably be in the hunt for it.” McAfee said.

The girls team is currently sitting at fifth on the rankings and is also hoping for a shot at the state title.

“The girls have a good chance to finish in the top five or top three (at state), but Baldwin is really good,” McAfee said.

At the beginning of the season, McAfee said that his goal was for the teams, and specifically for each runner, to run up to his or her potential. He believes that this goal has been achieved.

“The runners have reached their potential for the most part. There are still some that aren’t quite there yet and can get there in the next few meets. Considering where some of them were, for the most part they did a really good job,” McAfee said.

Regionals will be held at Wyandotte County Park in Kansas City, Kan. on Oct. 20, and the State meet is on Oct. 27 at Wamego Country Club.
