WPA opinions

De Soto High School is holding its annual winter dance, a Silent Cinema themed Women Pay All on Jan. 16 from 8 – 11.

Some people view WPA as a fun thing and a good idea.

“I feel like it’s an important dance to have because it gives the girls, or opposite partner, an opportunity to ask their date,” sophomore Sam McGuire said.

Others have varying opinions.

“It’s just like homecoming. It’s literally the same exact thing,” sophomore Makayla Mathies said.

Overall, the majority of DHS students are excited about the upcoming dance.

“I believe it’s needed just to reverse roles and stray from the norm,” McGuire said.

For the people who agree that WPA is a good thing, they can also say that it is not the most popular thing at DHS.

“I think it’s fun, I mean I had a fun time last year, but I don’t think it’s nearly as popular [as Homecoming or Prom]” sophomore Keirstyn Mascareno said.

Some believe WPA is not as popular due to several factors, including the switching of roles.

“I think a lot of people disrespect the idea of it because the roles are switched between the guy and girl or whatever pairing, I think the different-ness frightens some people,” McGuire said.

The people who don’t really care for WPA had some reasonable opinions as to why they were not 100 percent for it.

“I don’t really think it’s that great, and who wants to wear a dress in the winter when it’s freezing cold outside?” sophomore Jamie Dalsing said.

They also had some opinions about why the attendance of WPA was lower than that of homecoming or Prom.

“I don’t really think it affects our school a whole lot. Not very many people go to it,” Dalsing said.

Though the students of DHS have varying opinions, the semi-formal dance is still an enjoyable experience for those who go.

“I think there is a softer vibe associated with [WPA] just because people don’t put too much pressure on it, it’s a lot more relaxed [than Homecoming or Prom],” McGuire said.
