Preparing for state assessments

With the annual Kansas state assessments coming up, teachers have taken time out of their lesson plans to make sure the students are prepared to succeed on the test.
Students approach state testing differently. Some might be worried and stressed while others might be used to taking tests like these.

For sophomore Morgan Laplante, state assessments are just something one has to do as a student.

“I don’t really mind state testing,” Laplante said. “It’s one of those tests that you want to get over with.”

Sophomore Caroline Whipple appreciates the test preparation by teachers but realizes students can’t really study outside of class for them.

“I feel like preparing for the test is essential and without it, I wouldn’t be as confident going into the test,” Whipple said. “It’s kind of hard to study for the state assessments because you do not know what type of questions you will be asked.”

While some teachers have students get on the computers and take a practice test to get used to the program, other teachers will have packets with problems strictly about the test.

“In math, we have gotten on the program to take practice tests,” Laplante said. “We also have done an in-class activity preparing us for the test.”

As tests are coming up after spring break, students might feel the stress but, it is comforting for them to know that they have had some preparation going into the test.

“The pros of the state assessments are getting to see where we’re at on an educational standpoint,” Whipple said. “Though this is nice, the biggest con would definitely be the amount of stress and pressure it is to actually take the test.”

The start of fourth quarter means state testing. Students should not be worried about what to study since their teachers have prepared them. High school students have been taking these tests for years now and are prepared for what is coming.
