This summer,  De Soto high school students enrolled in AP Biology or Spanish courses have the opportunity to travel with their classmates to Costa Rica, if they choose to partake in this adventure.

Although the school-sponsored trip is still months away, the students traveling with their teachers have many things that they need to prepare for before embarking on the educational vacation.

Some of the qualifications for this trip are grades. Select students from AP Bio must retain their grades in that class and show interest in their biology class in order to be chosen. Any student can sign up who is enrolled in the class, but AP Bio teacher and chaperone Scott Sharp selects a group of students to come along.

Senior Emma Bascom, who is attending the trip is very excited for the trip to come.

“At the beginning of the year, we were all told about the trip by Mr. Sharp, and it sounded like it would be a lot of fun and a great learning experience,” Bascom said. “I signed up as soon as I could, and now that the trip is getting close I’m getting very excited.”

As for the students coming from Spanish classes, any person in the upper level courses may sign up and go as long as they get the proper traveling requirements, such as a passport and a signed permission slip.

Senior Gabby Mallozzi thinks that this trip would be great for all students to experience.

“I think that by going on trips like these, students learn how to get a full understanding of a country’s culture and traditions [while] having fun with your friends at the same time,” Mallozzi said.

The anticipation of the trip is sparking interest in many of DHS’ underclassmen, like freshman Lucas Nascimento, as they anticipate their chance to begin a once in life-time journey.

“When I’m old enough to go on the trip I will for sure sign up to go experience new things with my classmates.”
