DHS 3-D printing club holds first meeting

The 3-D printing club is the newest club at De Soto High School. Physics and Engineering teacher Ben Cook sponsors the club.

“I was asked to teach engineering last year, and the teacher before me had written a grant so we could have this. I knew we had it but a lot of kids didn’t know about it,” Cook said. “When the engineering room became the library [the printer] was moved to my room … I kept looking at it and I thought ‘we need to do something more with this,’ because it’s such a cool piece of technology.”

The club is not only focused on learning 3-D printing technology, but on raising money to purchase more equipment.

“We only have one 3-D printer. It’s a good one but it’s kind of limited, so there are things we need to modify. The 3-D print club is kids who are interested in printing, but it’s also about fundraising for more 3-D printing technology and learning more about it,” Cook said.

Sophomore Elizabeth Seidl enjoys working with technology that is not always easily accessible.

“It’s an interesting opportunity. 3-D printers are expensive. I don’t have that opportunity  at home so I want to take advantage of it and try something new,”Sedil said.

Sophomore Jessica Roberts agreed with Seidl.

“It’s a good way to use different technology that’s not common. You can’t always go home and 3-D print,” Roberts said.

Cook would like for the club to eventually expand into a class.

“It would be really cool if we had a class. There’s a lot of different things we can do with it,” Cook said.

Seidl hopes to improve her technological skills by participating in the club.

“I hoping to improve a lot and be able to make more complicated things, and be able to use [the printer] on my own,”Seidl said.
