Student Council hosts book drive

De Soto’s Student Council is sponsoring a book drive from Oct. 28- Nov. 1.

STUCO decided to do this because the Johnson County Christmas Bureau made it known that there was a need for books in the community.

Although in the past STUCO would hold a coat drive, this year, the group wanted to change it up. After taking a vote, the general consensus was to hold a book drive instead.

“We thought we would try and do something different,” STUCO adviser Lori Hughes said.

STUCO will be accepting gently used or new books which will then be brought to the Bureau. The books should be elementary through high school reading level.

“[Giving books] is just not something people think of,” Hughes said.

Leaders in Teen Education (LITE) team will also be helping the bureau by holding a food drive for them later in the month.

To motivate students to bring books STUCO will award a sweet treat party to the Seminar that brings the most books.

Hughes thinks that students should participate in the book drive as a way to make a difference.

“I think reading is extremely important and I think that if we can donate to that cause at any time then it can definitely make an impact,” Hughes said.
