LITE team raises books for Kenya

LITE+team+raises+books+for+Kenya

Leaders In Teen Education (LITE) team will be collecting gently used or new books for the a school in Kenya from Monday, Feb. 2 to Friday, Feb. 22.

This project began when Starside Elementary found out that its sister school in Kenya did not have a library. The school then asked the LITE team and Lexington Trails to participate in this event.

“It has kind of become a three-building activity,” said LITE team sponsor Jennifer Sosna.

This is not the first time that the LITE team has been a partner with Starside. The group helps the school with their different events, including tutoring sessions that occurs every Tuesday.

The books, as well as other items Starside collects, will be sent to Kenya in a container over the summer.

“The container will be full of things like books, school supplies and home goods,” Sosna said.

The LITE team’s goal for the book drive is to collect 500 books. The group is on the right track; on the first day of the drive the team received 15 items.

The activity will last approximately two weeks. If people want to bring items to teacher-parent conferences, they will be able to. The bins are located in front of the office, making it easier for people to be able to quickly drop the books off.

“We are just hoping to fill those [the bins] up, and get as many [books] as we can,” Sosna said. “If we get more than 500 then we will be thrilled.”
