Letter from the Editor: Issue 1

Wildcats,

You may have noticed: We’re a little different. Hot dang, it feels good to hold the paper in my hands! I am so proud to be able to bring this product to our community.

The paper is sleeker, better designed, more well written, and just cooler. I’m proud of it and my staff is as well.

This issue, we wanted to focus on the things that make our school great. We have an overview of the construction work on page two, to showcase the improvements coming to our school next year. Directly underneath that, Kelly Henning comes in with a feature on yet another eccentric club in our school, Recorder Club.

On the next page, we went wider into local events. Rachel Hopkins writes an excellent piece on a new feature to De Soto Days, a yearly celebration in our community. On the next page, Sydney Hoover republishes an overview of an important issue we covered last year, that finally wrapped itself up; you might notice a pretty sick info graphic on there as well.

Then, we’ve got sports. Not just sports, but the relationships they form through the hardships they experience on the field or court of their choosing. The soccer boys take on a grueling boot camp and grow from it; The hinkle sisters bond through their favorite sport; Zekkiah Hird and the cheer team mesh well; and through a unique opportunity the football team gets to meet the chiefs!

On the back cover, we decided to showcase some ascetics we have at De Soto High School with amateur photographers Zach Yarbrough and Sam McGuire. This back page will almost always include a new feature we’re putting in: a collection of interesting photos with an article or extended captions telling a story.

While you’re on the website, take a look around. We have posted new content almost every school day for a week now, and in the coming issues it will start being integrated into our print seamlessly.

The first goal we laid out as a staff this year was to bring something to the community that we all were proud of, and felt like we contributed to equally. As the editor in chief, I have no doubt in my mind we accomplished this goal. Hopefully this smaller 8 page issue is a good teaser of what’s to come for our publication. Enjoy!

Sincerely,
