With the end of the year approaching, the De Soto High School theater program is preparing for its spring musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

This has given another opportunity for students like junior Connor Young to showcase their theatrical talent.

In the 2017 spring musical Young played the role of Mr. Mushnik, a greedy salesman,  in the program Little Shop of Horrors.

This year, Young tried out for the part of William Barfee and did an excellent job according to choir teacher Mindy Fry.

“He brought in a great Barfee character and he sang the part really well,” Fry said. “He just beat out the rest of the competition.”

Young is happy that he was cast as Barfee and is looking forward to practicing for and performing the musical.

“I’m excited to have a lead, of course, and to be able to do something that isn’t necessarily an orthodox role,” Young explained. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Not only is Young in the musical, but he also participates in band as well as AP classes.

Young explained that his favorite class at DHS is Game Design because he “gets to be creative.”

Outside of school, Young enjoys baking cookies and cake in addition to playing with his chickens.

“I have six chickens, and they are my pride and joy,” Young said. “I love them dearly.”

Between the upcoming theater performance, school work and his hobbies, Young is confident that he will never have too much time on his hands but is excited for the remainder of the school year.
