De Soto High School welcomed a new School Resource Officer to the school this year. Deputy Jon Keys has been with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department for seven years.

Keys, or commonly known as Officer Keys, did not start his career as a police officer. He began his adult life in the military, serving for eight years before going to college and graduating in 2010.

After college, Keys went into the police academy, completing a four- month training course on how to become a police officer.

When Keys graduated from the academy, he went to start in the Johnson County Detention Unit or better known as the jail.

“While in the Military I learned  the value of helping people and doing something other than your typical 9 to 5 desk job. Law enforcement seemed to be kind of a natural extension to that,”  Keys said.

After he worked in detention, he went to patrol to enforce traffic in the unincorporated areas of Johnson County.

When the job become available, Keys expressed interest in finding a new place where he could make a difference and ended up here at DHS.

If you see Deputy Keys walking around school or patrolling one of the many activities here at DHS,  make sure to stop and say “Hi”; and always remember, buckle up and slow down.
