Junior Quinton Marschall works on recording a song for one of his albums.

Since he was 12 years old, junior Quinton Marschall has wanted to make music. As of last year, he began creating an album featuring only his multi-talented self.

“I’ve used guitar, bass guitar, piano, omnichord [a kind of synthesizer], alto saxophone, bass clarinet and several kinds of recorders,” Marschall said.

He began playing instruments when he was 13, starting with the guitar and piano. Then, just a year ago, he picked up the bass clarinet and the recorder, as well as the alto sax last August.

“I don’t really count the omnichord as something you have to learn how to play,” Marschall said. “It just requires basic music knowledge.”

Currently, Marschall is working on two albums: one with an indie/alternative sound and one in the “ambient” genre.

“[Ambient music] is basically music that focuses less on structure and distinct ‘songs,’ and more on sounds that elicit feelings or trigger memories.”

His ambient songs, according to Marschall, are based around themes and feelings rather than lyrics or melodies.

“Lately I’ve been working on the ambient one more, and it’s about halfway done, but I only have one song of the other album done,” Marschall said.

Marschall uses a free software called Audacity to record his music, which he says took awhile to learn how to use.
