De Soto High School offers many activities, ranging from football to sewing club to Magic the Gathering club to swim team. However, some students find their passions outside of school.

Junior Justin Gammon’s favorite sport is hockey, but it is not offered here at DHS, so he takes his talents to the Kansas City Stars.

“Playing hockey is great for me because you get more freedom than school sports. We get to travel a lot more and spend more time with our team,” Gammon said.

His team has traveled all over the midwest for various sized tournaments.

“We’ve been to Jefferson City, Missouri, Wichita, Kansas, Springfield, Missouri, and all around Kansas City,” Gammon said.

Gammon has played since he was in eighth grade and has focused on it ever since. Because hockey is so different from other sports, mostly due to it being on ice, it takes years to become good.

“I just spent a lot of time in the rink trying to find my balance at first. After that it’s just practice,” Gammon said.

This year’s season started the first week of November for Gammon, who has no shortage of confidence in his team.

The Stars have games up until mid February, facing teams from all around the area.

Asked if his team would be in a place to win every game this year, he responded without hesitation.

“Obviously,” Gammon said.
