Academy Awards are not the People’s Choice Awards

The Academy Awards occurred over the weekend and apparently nuclear war did as well considering how everyone reacted on Twitter to the winners.

For example, when Cate Blanchett won best actress for her role in Blue Jasmine, many people started freaking out on twitter. After all, who was this person who absolutely no one had heard of (except for everyone who followed the news and heard that she was the favorite to win.)

I had actually watched her movie as well as the four other movies in that category, and believe me, she deserves that Oscar. Even though she wasn’t the most well-known actress among high school teenagers, she did deserve the Oscar.

The next time Twitter erupted, was when Leonardo Dicaprio was denied his best actor Oscar win, in favor of Matthew McConaughey, who starred in Dallas Buyers’ Club. Apparently Dicaprio’s performance was so amazing in the Wolf of Wall Street that every teenage girl was rooting for him; it, in fact, did not have to do with his face.

So when Dicaprio did lose to McConaughey, every teenage girl was tweeting about how ridiculous the award show was. One fellow peer said that the Oscars were stupid. The problem with these assertions was that none of these people had seen Dallas Buyers’ Club. They were angry about Dicaprio’s loss, but they never considered the fact that the winner actually had a better performance.

I was lucky enough to see both performances, and I can say that while Dicaprio performed very well, McConaughey was the one who really transcended into his character and make you forget about who he was in real life.

However, people did not care about this; one person claimed that he deserved an Oscar because he was one of the best actors of all time. One must realize, however, that the honorary Oscars recognize that fact while the other Oscars recognize that the Academy Awards are to honor the best acting done that year, not of all time.

Then I saw someone talk about how the Oscars are just for elitist and how we should be able to vote in them. What we must realize, however, is that the Oscars are meant to showcase the best films, actors/actresses, cinemotagraphy and many other categories of the year. If all people voted then this would not happen.

Instead of Cate Blanchett winning best actress, we would have Kristin Stewart winning, due to her huge fan base. The Oscars would not be a recognition of amazing talent, it would only be an acknowledgement of movies with huge pre-teen fan bases.

So stop complaining about how everyone you liked didn’t win; did you even see the competitions’ movies? I thought so.
