The De Soto High School theater department held a matinee performance of its version of the production Grease on Nov. 8.

A matinee is a daytime performance of a theatrical performance, so the theater department had to perform during the school day.

Senior Olivia Shurtleff, who played Cha Cha DiGregorio, felt that the daytime performance was beneficial to the show.

“I really thought the matinee was a good thing for us to perform,” Shurtleff said. “It showed what the cast needed to work on and what we did well.”

Although the show went well, the passing periods in between classes proved to be an obstacle for the cast.

“We were dodging people in the hall to try and make it on stage for our cue,” Shurtleff said. “We had to guard the prop tables to make sure no one took anything or ate any of the food props.”

The cast performed in front of the eighth grade class from Mill Creek Middle School and the first grade class from Starside Elementary.

Junior Sydney Janesko, a dance captain in the show, thought the performance went really well for the first live performance.

“The cast did really well,” Janesko said. “Even though it was in front of a younger audience and they didn’t understand as many jokes as the older crowd, it was still an awesome show and it was a lot of fun.”

Due to the large number of students wanting to participate, the chorus roles in the show were double casted.

Sophomore Trace Harre, who played Roger, a T-Bird, enjoyed the idea of double casting.

“I thought the double casting was a good idea,” Harre said. “It allowed everyone in the show to be seen by the audience, and it also gave the chorus roles a chance to see their friends perform. It also kept too many people from being on stage at the same time.”

Overall, everyone involved in the musical was proud of how the show finished and hopes to continue with these performances in the future.
