Fall musical announced

Fall+musical+announced

The musical was announced to be none other than The Wizard of Oz on Friday, Aug. 29. This musical features several major leads, such as Dorothy and The Cowardly Lion, as well as solos, chorus singing, and dancing.

“It’s the 75th anniversary, and it was a week later that we found out,” said Mary Etta Copeland, De Soto High School’s choral director. “London is releasing a remake of the movie for IMAX…the entire United States is going to be focused on The Wizard of Oz.”

When the musical was announced, there were nearly 100 students gathered in the theater. Some were returning for bigger opportunity, others were there for the first time. Either way, the musical seemed to have gained quite a bit of publicity.

“It is critical for kids to stay engaged,” drama teacher Jason Hagg said. “I will never cut anyone in the musical…there are so many places to do things.”

Instead of doing the more modern version of the musical, Copeland has chosen the Royal Shakespeare Company version, of which includes the land of the Evil Winkies and singing crows. Both of which are different than in the original 1939 movie. It is unsure as of yet if a real dog will be used for the character of Toto, but it is currently being considered.

“With me being new, I kind of went with recommendations from Mrs. Copeland, and she felt like that was just the show to do,” Hagg said.

Copeland and Hagg are willing to work with everyone on dances and songs. Both of them will be available after or before school for anyone interested in participating.
“I always like kids to show up with some confidence,” said Hagg. “I think they’ll be blown away by my personal commitment,” Hagg said.

Rehearsals are also going to be more engaging for everyone involved. Copeland encourages everyone auditioning to have a positive attitude about them.

Tryouts this year are being organized and sheets are pinned to the board outside of Copeland’s classroom. Dance rehearsal and tryouts are going to be held on Monday, Sept. 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. and singing auditions are Tuesday, Sept. 9 and 10 from 3 to 5p.m.
